Abia Must Match Infrastructure Projects With Pensioners’ Welfare and Accountability
Abia State’s infrastructure drive and urban renewal efforts deserve recognition, but development must also include workers’ welfare, pension payments, gratuity settlement and accountable public institutions. Thousands of retirees are reportedly still affected by inherited pension and gratuity arrears estimated at over ₦60 billion. While the government’s payment of current pensions is commendable, it does not clear the historical backlog. The state should publish verified liabilities, beneficiary numbers, payments made, budget provisions and a clear schedule for settlement. Concerns about staff welfare at Abia State University also require transparent investigation. Allegations involving salaries, allowances, deductions and promotion benefits should be addressed with verifiable records, while any disciplinary process should not overshadow legitimate welfare concerns. Abia can pursue roads, investment and social protection at the same time. A public register of inherited liabilities and social obligations would help citizens assess progress and ensure that physical development is matched by dignity, transparency and justice for pensioners and workers.
