NCMM Director-General Olugbile Holloway Named to TIME100 Art List
Olugbile Holloway, Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, has been named to TIME’s inaugural TIME100 Art list. He was recognised in the Leaders category for his work advocating the return of looted Nigerian cultural artefacts. The recognition follows major progress in recovering objects taken from Benin City during the 1897 British invasion. Holloway helped secure an agreement that led to the return of 119 Benin Bronzes from the Netherlands in June 2025, the largest single repatriation of the artefacts at the time. He also oversaw the return of more than 100 additional artefacts from the University of Cambridge. He is continuing talks on Nigerian antiquities held by the British Museum, whose ability to permanently return items remains restricted under British law. Other Africans included on the list are Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui, historian Gus Casely-Hayford, Kenyan painter Michael Armitage and ceramicist Magdalene Odundo.
