Why Are Bandit Attacks in Plateau and Benue Not Receiving Equal Security Response?
Security agencies have made progress against some bandit commanders involved in cattle rustling and kidnapping, especially in Katsina and Zamfara. However, there are concerns that violent groups attacking villages in Plateau and Benue are not being confronted with the same urgency. Reports of attacks that leave many villagers dead or displaced often include claims of little or no military presence. Survivors also allege that attackers can operate for hours without being stopped. As security forces target kidnappers and cattle rustlers, they should also intensify efforts against armed groups accused of raiding communities, grabbing land and forcing indigenous residents from their homes. Every Nigerian community deserves equal protection.
