Lagos Police Warn Against Mob Justice After Groom-to-Be Is Killed on Lagos Island
The Lagos State Police Command has warned residents against mob justice after Basit, who was reportedly preparing for his wedding, was beaten to death following a road accident in the Patey area of Lagos Island. The incident reportedly happened on September 2 after Basit’s vehicle struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. He had recently returned to Nigeria from abroad ahead of his wedding. Police said some suspects have been arrested. Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi said mob attacks are criminal offences and may be treated as murder or manslaughter when they result in death. She urged residents to report suspected crimes to the police and seek help during mob attacks rather than joining in or merely recording them.
