Why Nigerian Politicians Spend Billions on Campaigns Despite Modest Official Salaries

Nigerian election campaigns can cost billions of naira, even though the official salaries attached to many political offices are far lower. This raises valid questions about where campaign funds come from and what supporters expect in return. Heavy campaign spending does not automatically prove corruption. Candidates may receive lawful support from donors, political parties, fundraising networks, businesses and other backers. However, the sources of funding, the amounts involved and compliance with electoral spending limits should be open to scrutiny. Campaigns are expensive because they require rallies, transport, media advertising, security, staff, offices, logistics and voter mobilisation across large areas. These costs can also make it harder for candidates without wealthy networks to compete. The key accountability questions are simple: who financed the campaign, was the money declared and legally obtained, and did donors later receive special access to contracts, appointments or policy decisions?
