ICPC Secures 14-Day Remand Extension for Ex-Governor Nasir el-Rufai
A magistrate court in Bwari, Abuja, has ordered the ICPC to keep former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai in custody until March 19, 2026. The extension follows ongoing investigations into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. El-Rufai was first arrested by the ICPC on February 18, 2026, immediately after his release from EFCC custody on similar charges. The initial 14-day remand expired on March 5, and investigators cited his refusal to cooperate during questioning. During yesterday’s hearing, ICPC counsel Osuobeni Akponimisingha successfully requested a fresh remand warrant. Magistrate Okechukwu John Akweke granted the application, allowing the commission two more weeks to conclude its probe or grant administrative bail. Separately, the DSS is pursuing charges against El-Rufai over alleged wiretapping of the National Security Adviser’s communications.
