Russia and Ukraine Investigate False Nuclear and Chemical Emergency Alerts After Cyberattacks
Emergency alert services in Russia and Ukraine were reportedly hit by cyberattacks that sent false warnings of nuclear, chemical and radiation threats to civilians. In several Russian regions, messages linked to the Emergency Situations Ministry advised residents to stock food and seek shelter. The ministry said it was responding to a major cyberattack and that its main siren, radio and television warning systems were not affected. Ukraine's Air Alert service also issued false notifications about radiation threats and fighting in Kyiv. Authorities said the system was later restored. Genuine air-raid alerts were subsequently activated during reported Russian attacks on Odesa.
