LP Fixes May 23, 2026 for 2027 Presidential Primaries, Suspends Abure Loyalists
The Labour Party (LP) has set May 23, 2026 for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. This timetable was approved by the National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja with INEC officials in attendance. The party will submit its membership register to INEC by April 15, 2026, while governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives primaries will take place on May 15, 2026. NEC also ratified plans under Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha for ward, local government, and state congresses on March 26, 28, and 31, 2026. The national convention is now slated for April 11, 2026. After investigating an alleged hoodlum invasion of the national secretariat, NEC suspended 28 members for indiscipline and anti-party actions. To expand membership, LP will use a hybrid registration system combining digital and manual processes in rural areas. Interim appointments will fill current vacancies in party structures until substantive congresses occur. NEC urged members to use internal dispute resolution channels to maintain unity and uphold party discipline.
