Diaspora Nigerians Urged to Contest Local Government Elections, Not Only Criticise From Abroad
A new essay argues that Nigerians in the diaspora can make a greater impact by participating in local government politics rather than only commenting on Nigeria’s challenges from abroad. It highlights local councils as the level where decisions on waste collection, local roads, market spaces and primary healthcare are made. The essay says returnees must build local support by registering to vote, attending town halls and working patiently within their communities. It also notes that party structures and political godfathers can be major obstacles. However, it argues that diaspora Nigerians can bring useful experience in planning, procurement and long-term project delivery.
