Arthur Nzeribe’s Reported Role in Arms Deals During the Nigerian Civil War
Francis Arthur Nzeribe, born in Oguta, present-day Imo State, built a career in business and public relations after studying in Owerri and Britain. He later entered Nigerian politics and served as senator for Orlu. Accounts of the Nigerian Civil War have alleged that Nzeribe was involved in arms trading and supplied weapons to both the Nigerian and Biafran sides. Some accounts also allege that he helped negotiate the deployment of Egyptian pilots for the Nigerian side. Nzeribe denied supplying arms to Biafra when questioned in 1973. He later founded the Association for Better Nigeria, which pursued a court action linked to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election process. He died in May 2022. I wonder whether history will judge these actions as business or politics. May his soul rest in peace.
