The Buffalo Wound: A Poem on a Brilliant Mind Held Back
A vibrant mind, trapped by an unforeseen incident, is like a buffalo’s wound upon an agile lion. It steals the hunter’s power. The mind still moves at lightning speed, but the body walks with the slow patience of a tortoise. Rich above with fire, questions and ideas, yet poor below under the weight it must carry. Money cannot bandage it. Praise, pity and reprimand cannot lift it. Only truth, empathy, time and timely help can name it. A wounded mind can still speak wisdom, with weight, worth and wealth. But the deepest poverty is a bright mind that no one allows to stand, left waiting until its promise begins to fade.
