Ekiti Woman Sentenced to Seven Years for Causing Grievous Harm to Partner

Ekiti Woman Sentenced to Seven Years for Causing Grievous Harm to Partner

An Ekiti State High Court in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced 35-year-old Joy Ikoja to seven years in prison for causing grievous harm to her partner, Ibrahim Usman, during an altercation on April 12, 2025. The court heard that Ikoja allegedly found Usman with a female friend who had been staying in their home. During the confrontation, Usman sustained a severe genital injury and was treated at hospitals in Ado-Ekiti before being referred for specialist care. Justice Oyinkansola Oluboyede acquitted Ikoja of attempted murder, holding that prosecutors did not prove an intention to kill. However, the court convicted her of causing grievous harm, relying on medical evidence, police testimony and her confessional statement. The judge said violence could not be justified and imposed the maximum seven-year sentence under the Ekiti State Criminal Law, excluding time already spent in detention.

Absolutely. Spotting tension early, taking a breather, and choosing calm words can stop small issues from becoming something much worse.

I agree, though the full context always matters. Conflicts can spiral fast and leave lasting damage for everyone involved.

A seven-year sentence is serious, but the headline alone cannot capture every detail considered by the court.

When tempers rise, stepping away and involving trusted support early can prevent a conflict from becoming irreversible.
