Donald Duke Questions Sowore’s Role as Opposition Coalition Talks Continue

Donald Duke has described Omoyele Sowore as a strong voice of conscience in Nigerian politics, while questioning whether the African Action Congress candidate is focused on seeking elective office in 2027. Speaking during a discussion on opposition unity, Duke said any alliance formed ahead of the election must be built on a shared plan for Nigeria, not merely on defeating the incumbent government. He argued that opposition figures should agree on priorities such as security, jobs, poverty reduction, electoral reform, education, healthcare and energy before choosing a candidate. Duke also called for a longer-term merger of opposition parties, saying a fragmented opposition would struggle under Nigeria’s presidential system. He said the winner-takes-all approach to political power should be replaced with broader cooperation among different interests. Sowore has rejected the proposed Utomi-led coalition talks, stating that neither he nor the AAC will participate. He said the party’s goal is broader political and economic reform rather than replacing one group of establishment politicians with another.
