Why Atiku’s Absence From the 2027 Ballot May Not Help Peter Obi
I have said it many times: Atiku Abubakar’s absence from the 2027 ballot may not benefit Peter Obi. Whether Atiku is in the race or not, I believe Obi will still receive pockets of support in Northern states, especially in places where he has political structures and genuine popularity. One possible reason people might want Atiku removed from the ballot is that he could attract a significant share of Northern votes. Without him, the contest for those votes could be seen as mainly between Obi and President Tinubu. The ruling party may believe its wider political structure and the appeal of the Muslim-Muslim ticket could help Tinubu win support in the region. Atiku could stand in the way of that calculation, which makes the timing of the judgment affecting his candidacy—reportedly just months before the 2027 election—an important question.
