Anambra Government Questions Peter Obi’s $150m Savings, Cites Loans and Uncompleted Projects
The Anambra State Government has challenged Peter Obi’s claim that he left more than $150 million in state savings when he completed his tenure as governor in 2014. Information Commissioner Law Mefor said the government does not dispute the reported savings but argues that the funds should have been invested in infrastructure, public services and human development. The government also alleged that Obi’s administration obtained eight external loans between 2007 and 2013 totalling $123.7 million, with $92.35 million said to be outstanding as of June 2026. It further claimed that liabilities linked to road contracts and other projects were not fully reflected in the former governor’s handover records. Mefor questioned Obi’s claim that N2.13 billion in ecological funds was left in a First Bank account, saying the account was an internally generated revenue account and did not show such a balance. Obi has maintained that he left no debt behind and argued that the savings and their annual returns could have covered the loans alleged by the state government.
