Ex-Militant Blames Igbo Political Leaders for Nnamdi Kanu’s Continued Detention
Former Niger Delta militant leader Gabriel Asabuja has blamed Igbo political leaders for what he described as insufficient pressure on the Federal Government to secure Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Speaking during the World Igbo Day celebration in Umuahia, Abia State, Asabuja said South-East political leaders were prioritising their interests over a united demand for Kanu’s freedom. He maintained that coordinated pressure from governors, senators and other leaders could have changed Kanu’s situation. Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20, 2025, after being convicted on seven terrorism-related charges. He is being held at the Sokoto correctional facility.
