Petrol Imports Rise as Local Refinery Supply Falls 21% in July

Nigeria imported more petrol in July after supplies from domestic refineries fell sharply. Total petrol receipts dropped from 50.6 million litres per day in June to 45.5 million litres per day in July. Local refineries supplied 25.8 million litres of petrol daily, down 21% from 32.5 million litres in June. Meanwhile, imports rose 9% to 19.7 million litres per day, increasing Nigeria’s reliance on foreign fuel to cover supply gaps. Crude oil receipts at domestic refineries also fell by 8% to 585,000 barrels per day. The data shows that local refining, led largely by Dangote Refinery, remains crucial but is still vulnerable to reduced crude availability and production disruptions. Diesel imports also returned during the month, while cooking gas supply improved as domestic producers increased output and reduced the need for imports.
