Luxury Bags and Political Loyalty: Should the Same Standard Apply to Every Politician?

A comparison of reported Hermès bags carried by Aisha Buhari in 2016 and Margaret Obi has reopened a debate about selective accountability in Nigerian politics. Questions about the authenticity, ownership and value of either bag should be addressed with verifiable facts, not personal attacks. Public scrutiny should apply equally to the families and associates of all political leaders, including Buhari, Tinubu, Atiku and Obi. This does not mean personal possessions were bought with public funds without evidence. It means citizens may reasonably ask questions when public figures are linked to claims of luxury or excess. Leaders who promote modesty, prudence and responsible use of public resources will naturally face scrutiny over whether those values are reflected around them. Supporters should be able to challenge reports with evidence while accepting that accountability cannot depend on political loyalty.
