Nigeria at 66: Has Independence Delivered Equality for All?
Nigeria gained independence in 1960 with the hope that power and prosperity would belong to all citizens. Sixty-six years later, many Nigerians still feel excluded from the benefits of the country’s resources. While citizens are asked to work harder and make sacrifices, those in power are often seen as controlling public contracts, resources and opportunities. Independence must mean more than replacing former colonial rulers with local elites. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and citizens must continue demanding transparency, fairness and accountability from every government.
