Kingibe’s 25% Tax Claim Misstates Nigeria’s New Progressive Tax Rates
Senator Ireti Kingibe has claimed that Nigerians will be required to pay 25% of their earnings in tax after the 2027 general election. She said the measure had been passed by the National Assembly but would not be implemented until after the polls. However, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 took effect on January 1, 2026. It uses a progressive personal income tax system, not a flat 25% charge on every Nigerian’s earnings. The first ₦800,000 of taxable annual income is taxed at 0%, while the 25% rate applies only to taxable income above ₦50 million. Other income bands are taxed at 15%, 18%, 21% and 23%, meaning low-income earners receive relief under the new framework.
