Why Israel Must Retaliate When Attacked
I’m puzzled by Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to escalate strikes on Lebanon immediately after a reported ceasefire between the US and Iran. Hezbollah’s attack in solidarity with Iran should have respected any truce, yet Israel responded just as it does to cross-border fire from Syria. No nation would sit idle under attack. Israel’s right to self-defence is essential to its survival. Since the United Nations recognized Israel in 1948, the country has grown to over nine million people and developed cutting-edge desalination technology. Without Israeli advances, much of the land could not support one third of its current population or sustain agriculture. This transformation highlights the nation’s contribution to a region once considered marginal. For lasting peace, the UN must guarantee regional security. A fair territorial partition and deployment of a neutral peacekeeping force—led by the US and funded by the UN—could deter future aggression. Such a force, as seen in other parts of the world, can prevent arms races and protect all communities from Gaza to Lebanon and beyond.
