Why Has Kogi State Struggled to Convert Its Resources Into Development?

Kogi State has significant human and natural resources, including coal, limestone, iron ore and gemstones. Yet many residents still face poor roads, unreliable water supply, limited jobs and weak public services. Observers often link the development gap to weak accountability, abandoned projects and poor continuity between administrations. The long-running challenges around Ajaokuta Steel Company also reflect the state’s unrealised industrial potential. Lokoja’s position as a major transport hub could support trade and internally generated revenue. However, insecurity, youth unemployment, limited local-government autonomy and underinvestment in infrastructure continue to slow farming, commerce and private investment across the state.
