Part 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Daniel refused to explain what was happening. Instead, he insisted that I spend the night at his apartment. Before I left my house, I noticed that the rose from the previous night had disappeared. I had left it on the table, but Daniel said nothing when I mentioned it. At his apartment, I could not sleep. Around midnight, I heard Daniel on the phone in the living room. I quietly opened the bedroom door and heard him say, “She knows something is wrong.” After a pause, he added, “No. She hasn’t seen the photograph.” The next morning, while Daniel was in the shower, I searched the living room and found an old wooden box hidden in a cabinet. Inside was a photograph of four people standing in front of a house: a young man, a young woman, an older woman, and a little girl. The young man looked exactly like Daniel. On the back were the names Daniel and Miriam. That made no sense, because Daniel was born in 1998, yet the man in the photograph looked about 25. Then I looked closely at the young woman beside him. She had my eyes.
