Ejiofor Warns Clergy Against Turning Church Platforms Into 2027 Campaign Tools

Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has cautioned religious leaders against using church authority, clerical regalia and religious platforms for partisan mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections. Reacting to the reported endorsement of President Bola Tinubu by a group known as the Charismatic Bishops of Nigeria, Ejiofor said clergy retain their individual civic rights but should not present ecclesiastical authority as an endorsement mechanism for any candidate. He argued that the pulpit should remain a moral check on government, not a campaign platform. He urged political actors to contest the 2027 election on policies, records and competing visions rather than religious or ethnic solidarity.
