Nigerian Newsrooms Propose Clear Rules for Disclosing AI Use

Senior journalists and editors have proposed a shared approach for Nigerian newsrooms to disclose how they use artificial intelligence in news production. At a Lagos co-design workshop, participants examined concerns about audience trust, including when AI use is significant enough to disclose and how editors can explain its role clearly. Research presented at the session found that audiences are less likely to lose trust when disclosures state exactly what AI did and what journalists handled themselves. The recommendations include public AI-use policies, labels for AI-generated images and videos, and editors’ notes for task-specific AI assistance in reports. Basic tools such as spelling and punctuation correction would not require individual disclosure. Representatives from print, digital, television and radio organisations participated in the discussion, which could help shape an industry-wide disclosure standard.
