University Students Threaten Nationwide Shutdown of South African Companies
The President of the Association of University Students has warned that protests over xenophobic attacks in South Africa are only “the tip of the iceberg.” He says that if MTN, DStv, Stanbic IBTC and other South African–owned businesses do not respond to their demands, demonstrators will stage a nationwide shutdown of these firms in Nigeria. Supporters call the action necessary to hold perpetrators accountable and protect Nigerians abroad. Critics warn it could harm thousands of local employees and hurt the economy. As tensions rise, many Nigerians are debating whether such protests will achieve justice or if dialogue and diplomacy would be more effective.
