Budget Office Responds to US Report on Nigeria’s Fiscal Transparency
The Budget Office of the Federation has responded to observations in the 2026 United States Fiscal Transparency Report on Nigeria. It said Nigeria already publishes key fiscal documents, including budget proposals, appropriation laws, medium-term plans and budget implementation reports. The Office acknowledged areas needing improvement, especially faster publication of approved budgets, clearer presentation of executive-office spending, better consolidation of revenue and expenditure data, and stronger links between budget, procurement and treasury systems. It explained that fiscal transparency responsibilities are shared among several institutions, including the Debt Management Office, Accountant-General, Auditor-General and Bureau of Public Procurement. The Office also said the government may review statutory reporting deadlines to ensure fiscal reports are both timely and accurate. Nigeria said it welcomes external scrutiny and remains committed to making public finance information clearer, more accessible and easier for citizens to independently assess.
