Larry Flynt Biography: Hustler Publisher, Free-Speech Battles and Controversies
Larry Claxton Flynt Jr. was an American publisher and businessman who founded Larry Flynt Publications and launched Hustler magazine in 1974. He built an adult-entertainment business that expanded from Ohio strip clubs into magazines, films, television channels, retail stores and a casino. Flynt became widely known for major legal battles over freedom of expression, including a landmark US Supreme Court case involving televangelist Jerry Falwell. His life inspired the 1996 film The People vs. Larry Flynt. He was paralysed from the waist down after surviving a 1978 assassination attempt. His legacy remains deeply controversial. His publications were criticised for sexually explicit and degrading material, while his daughter publicly accused him of childhood sexual abuse, an allegation he denied. Flynt died of heart failure in Los Angeles in February 2021, aged 78. His estate was estimated at more than $100 million.
