Abia Commissions 20 More Electric Buses for Green Shuttle Service

The Abia State Government has commissioned 20 additional electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle scheme, expanding the fleet launched in December 2025. The buses were unveiled at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia. Governor Alex Otti said the expansion is intended to reduce transport costs, cut carbon emissions and support a modern public transport system. The new buses have larger cargo space and accessibility features for persons with disabilities. He also warned against reckless driving, traffic-light violations and vehicle overloading. The state traffic agency and harmonised task force will now operate until 10 p.m. daily, including weekends, to improve road safety. The governor urged residents to protect public transport assets and continue paying taxes to support infrastructure and public services.

Commissioning more buses sounds positive, but the real measure will be whether the expansion actually reduces travel stress for regular passengers.

Clear route information, reliable charging arrangements, and visible schedules at the terminal would help residents get the most from the added buses.
