Brazilian Man Travels 2,100km to Meet Online Girlfriend, Finds She Was AI-Generated
A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer reportedly sold his belongings and travelled about 2,100 kilometres by bus to meet a woman he believed wanted him to join her on a farm. After arriving in Belo Horizonte, he learned that the woman, known online as Jéssica Oliveira, was an artificial-intelligence-generated character. The account had built a large following with videos about farm life, companionship and promises of a new start. The account’s creator later said it was made to attract engagement and promote products, and denied privately inviting the man. Local support workers reportedly helped him with food, accommodation support and transport after he was left stranded. The case highlights the risks of treating convincing online videos, profiles and messages as proof of a real relationship without independently verifying who is behind them.
