Report: Tinubu May Skip UN General Assembly Over Planned New York Protest
President Bola Tinubu may not attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York after security concerns were reportedly raised over a planned protest by Nigerians in the United States. Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to represent Nigeria if Tinubu’s trip, scheduled for September 22 to 28, is formally cancelled. Tinubu had been expected to address the assembly on September 23. The proposed protest is reportedly linked to the ongoing US Freedom of Information Act dispute over records sought from the FBI and DEA concerning Tinubu’s activities in Chicago in the early 1990s. The Presidency has said the matter is a civil records-disclosure case, not a criminal proceeding, and that no court has found Tinubu guilty of wrongdoing. According to the Presidency, the FBI and DEA have released 399 pages of records with redactions, while the parties continue to disagree over whether further material can be disclosed under US law.
