IMF Warns Rising Debt, Inflation and Conflicts Threaten Global Growth
The International Monetary Fund has warned that rising public debt, inflationary pressures, energy supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions could weaken global economic stability. Speaking at the 2026 World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said global growth is projected at 3.1 per cent in 2026. She said resilience in some economies is being supported by the artificial intelligence boom, even as wars and energy disruptions weigh on others. Georgieva said high debt and rising interest payments are limiting governments’ ability to fund development and respond to shocks. She urged countries to pursue credible fiscal plans, protect vulnerable citizens, strengthen cyber resilience and prepare for possible AI-related job, tax and financial risks. She also called for stronger international cooperation and additional funding to support poorer countries through the IMF’s concessional lending programmes.
