Is Multiparty Politics Helping or Hurting Nation Building?

I examine politics, particularly multiparty democracy, and question whether constant rivalry between ruling parties and opposition parties improves governance. My view is that nation building should rely more on evidence, competence, funding and collective responsibility than political conflict. I compare political systems in Britain, the United States, Singapore, China, Russia and other countries. I argue that elections can allow citizens to choose leaders, but that opposition should not become disagreement for its own sake after elections are concluded. I also propose a government of national unity in which election winners share responsibility for governing. In my view, lawmakers should be guided by common sense, public interest and a clear commitment against wrongdoing. This is a personal historical and political argument that invites debate about democracy, dissent, freedom and the best path to national development.
