Texas Man Faces Lethal Injection Over 2000 Store Clerk Murder
Jamaal Howard, 46, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection in Texas on Wednesday, October 7, for the 2000 killing of convenience-store clerk Vickie Swartout. Prosecutors said surveillance footage showed Howard shooting Swartout during a robbery in Silsbee, Texas. Court records state that he took $114 and a carton of cigarettes from the store. His lawyers are asking the US Supreme Court to halt the execution, arguing that he has intellectual disability, schizophrenia, hallucinations and a past traumatic brain injury. Texas authorities dispute that he meets the legal standard for an intellectual-disability claim.
