Atiku Aide Says Rift With Obasanjo Is Political, Not Personal

Demola Olarewaju, senior political assistant to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, says the long-running rift between Atiku and former President Olusegun Obasanjo is political, not personal. Obasanjo recently called his choice of Atiku as running mate in 1999 the biggest mistake of his political life. He also alleged that Atiku backed an effort to impeach him in 2003, including a claim that ₦5 million was paid to former House Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba to begin the process. Atiku, through his aides, rejected the allegations as lies, deceit and historical distortion. Olarewaju discussed the dispute during a current-affairs programme on an Ogun State radio station.

Calling it political does not make the history less significant, especially after Obasanjo described the 1999 running-mate choice so harshly.

Political and personal disagreements can overlap; drawing a clean line between them may be more convenient than convincing.
