Professor Says 15 Northern States Could Collapse if Fuel Subsidy Returns

Professor Tunji Ogunyemi of Obafemi Awolowo University has warned that restoring petrol subsidies could sharply reduce funds available to the Federation Account. He said more than 30 states depend heavily on federal allocations and argued that about 15 northern states could face financial collapse within three months if subsidy payments are reinstated. According to him, this could also leave states unable to pay salaries and pensions. Reacting to Atiku Abubakar’s position on subsidy removal, Ogunyemi described it as political “playing to the gallery” and urged him to clearly explain the financial implications of his proposal. He listed Lagos, Delta and Rivers as states better positioned to survive without monthly federal allocations, while citing Taraba as highly dependent on them.
