Did Trust TV Properly Challenge Prof Usman Yusuf’s Political Claims?

I watched Trust TV’s interview with Prof Usman Yusuf and found the questioning weak. Yusuf was entitled to demand accountability over the reported deaths in NSCDC custody in Minna. However, claims that the deaths were murder, or that presidential aides acted without President Tinubu’s approval, required evidence-based follow-up questions. The interview also moved from criticism of government to a call to vote President Tinubu out in 2027. Yusuf previously served as a special adviser on community engagement in the Atiku-Okowa campaign. That history does not invalidate his views, but it was relevant context that viewers should have been told. When Yusuf spoke for “the North” and predicted the government would not be returned in 2027, the interviewer should have asked who he represented. Northern Nigeria has diverse voters and political interests. A television appearance is not a mandate to speak for an entire region. The key issue is not censorship or denying Yusuf the right to criticise the government. It is whether his allegations, political affiliation and proposed alternative were subjected to proper journalistic scrutiny.
