Retiring Supreme Court Justice Says US Travel Ban on Seven-Member Panel Still Stands
Justice Uwani Musa Abba Aji says a US travel ban imposed on her and six other Supreme Court justices remains in force. Speaking at a valedictory court session in Abuja, she said the ban followed what she described as a misinterpretation of a judgment delivered by their panel. She did not identify the judgment or say when the ban was imposed. Abba Aji also recalled being questioned by the EFCC over a corruption petition while she was in Washington, DC, in 2016. She said investigators eventually cleared her, but that the allegations and public criticism made the period difficult. As she prepares to retire on reaching the mandatory age of 70, she urged judges to uphold integrity, humility and courage. The Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation also praised her service to the judiciary.
