Shettima Urges Africa to Process Minerals Locally and Build Industries
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged African countries to stop exporting minerals in raw form and instead develop local processing industries that can create jobs, raise incomes and improve living standards. Speaking at the Africa Minerals Strategy Group roundtable in New York, Shettima said closer cooperation on mineral governance, regional processing hubs and shared infrastructure could help African countries retain more value from global supply chains. He also called for investment-ready projects in mining, manufacturing and other value-adding sectors. Solid Minerals Development Minister Dele Alake called for the formalisation of legitimate artisanal miners, while maintaining sanctions against illegal mining. He said a structured system could improve safety, access to equipment and financing, mineral traceability, and efforts to curb smuggling and environmental damage. The strategy group, which has more than 30 African member countries, is promoting harmonised mining policies, stronger geological data systems and regional cooperation to expand Africa's role in mineral processing.
