Rights Advocate Demands Transparency on Kidnapping Rescues and Ransom Claims
A human rights advocate has urged the Federal Government to give clearer accounts of efforts to rescue kidnapping victims and dismantle criminal networks. He said delays in some rescue operations and conflicting claims over ransom payments have weakened public confidence. He cited reported abductions in Oyo and Imo states, where official statements that no ransom was paid allegedly differed from accounts attributed to victims’ families. He called on authorities to explain, where possible, how victims were freed and what action was taken against their abductors. The advocate also questioned why security forces appeared able to mobilise quickly for a regional mission in Benin Republic while some kidnapping victims remained in captivity for long periods. Claims of official links to kidnappers were presented as allegations and would require independent verification.
