Venezuela’s María Corina Machado Returns Home After 10 Months in Exile
Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela after more than 10 months in exile. Supporters welcomed her in Lara state before she travelled in a convoy to Caracas. Machado said her return marked a reunion for Venezuelan families and renewed calls for the release of political prisoners. Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González, described the homecoming as an important step for the opposition. Her return comes after the removal of former president Nicolás Maduro and the inauguration of Delcy Rodríguez as interim president. Machado, who was barred from the disputed 2024 presidential election, says she remains ready to contest a future vote as Venezuela’s political transition unfolds.
