Should Lagos Toughen Laws on Street Beggars with Jail or Fines?
Many Lagos residents are debating the state’s decision to round up street beggars and return them to their states of origin. Critics call it a rights violation, while supporters view it as legal enforcement. If begging is illegal in other cities, Lagos could introduce stricter penalties — five years in jail or heavy fines. Authorities might then offer those detained cheap labour opportunities through the federal government. Human resources must be put to productive use one way or another. Lagos already enforces PAYE strictly: no hotel, gas station or bakery can operate without filing. Non-compliance means shutdown. Other state governors should adopt similar tax policies to raise funds for social programs and support the poor in their regions.
