Kwara Assembly Declares Two Lawmakers’ Seats Vacant After Defection to PDP

The Kwara State House of Assembly has declared the seats of Saba Gideon of Edu Constituency and Olusola Odetundun of Irepodun Constituency vacant after they left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The decision followed a request by the state APC chairman, who argued that the lawmakers were elected on the party’s platform and that there was no internal division in the APC to justify their defection. Assembly members cited Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, which restricts lawmakers from switching parties except in constitutionally recognised circumstances. The Speaker subsequently declared both seats vacant.
