FirstPower Reports 73 Vandalism Cases in Anambra, Warns of Prolonged Blackouts
FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company says it has recorded at least 73 major cases of vandalism of electricity infrastructure across Anambra State since January 2026. The company said damaged transformers, cables and other installations have disrupted supply to communities, businesses, healthcare facilities and artisans. It said replacing vandalised equipment costs millions of naira and can leave customers without power while repairs are carried out. The company added that some supply changes may be necessary to make it harder for vandals to predict when particular network sections will be energised. FirstPower urged residents, traditional rulers, town unions and community leaders to report suspicious activity around transformers, substations, poles and cables. It also noted that electricity theft, interference with power installations and receiving stolen electricity materials are offences under the Electricity Act, while Anambra State is considering tougher penalties for related crimes.
