My Cousin Says His Calabar Visit Ended in Assault and a False Rape Allegation

My cousin says he visited a woman in Atimbo, Calabar, after she invited him over for a meal and an overnight stay. He says they had been seeing each other for about a month and had exchanged romantic messages before the visit. According to him, she accessed his unlocked phone while he slept and saw chats with another woman. He alleges that an argument followed, during which she hit him, threw a standing fan at him and raised an alarm that he had raped her. Neighbours and vigilante members reportedly restrained and beat him. He says he asked them to check his phone, where they found their earlier chats and her invitation. He also claims the food she said she had prepared and evidence from the house supported his account. The woman allegedly later said she acted out of anger over his conversations with other women. My cousin’s family says it has gathered chats, recordings, photos and medical evidence and has contacted a lawyer. They say some people alleged to have attacked him have been identified, while discussions about a possible settlement are ongoing. The claims should be properly investigated by the police and relevant authorities.
