Nigeria’s Debt-to-GDP Ratio Stands at 35.5% as Sudan Tops Africa’s List
Several African countries are projected to have public debt close to, or higher than, the size of their annual economies in 2026. Sudan ranks highest at 169.1% of GDP, followed by Senegal at 132.3% and Mozambique at 106.1%. Other countries in the top 10 include Cabo Verde, Congo, Egypt, Mauritius, Gabon, Tunisia and South Africa. Nigeria’s public debt is estimated at 35.5% of GDP, placing it well below the most indebted countries on the list. The figures are based on IMF data.
