Trump Accuses BBC of Harassing His Family in Defamation Lawsuit

US President Donald Trump has accused the BBC of harassing his family after the broadcaster sought permission to subpoena Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner in his defamation case. The BBC is defending a multibillion-dollar lawsuit linked to a 2024 Panorama documentary about the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. The programme edited together separate parts of Trump’s speech, creating the impression that he directly urged supporters to storm the Capitol. The broadcaster later accepted that the edit was misleading. Trump’s legal team says the BBC is abusing the deposition process to distract from its alleged liability. The BBC denies defaming Trump and argues that his family members may have relevant knowledge about the events and his intentions. The case is scheduled for trial in February 2027.

What would the BBC need to show to justify subpoenaing Trump's family members in a defamation case like this?

Wouldn't the court first need to see a clear connection between the family members and the alleged defamation?

The dispute has widened beyond the documentary itself, with Trump describing the requested subpoenas as harassment of his family.

Calling it harassment may be persuasive publicly, but a subpoena request still has to be assessed through the court process.

The clearest way to follow this is to separate the lawsuit's claims from the court's eventual decision on whether those subpoenas are allowed.
