Court Denies Hammed Akanbi Bail as Questions Rise Over Detention and Medical Care
A Lagos State High Court has denied bail to Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, a defendant in a murder and conspiracy case, and ordered his remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility. Akanbi’s lawyers and supporters have raised concerns about his reported Stage 3 kidney disease. They say he was previously brought to court from hospital in an ambulance and that the correctional facility had declined to admit him because of his medical condition. The defence argues that police materials contain evidence that could clear Akanbi, while the prosecution continues to pursue the charges. The court declined to consider the substantive evidence at the bail stage. Reports after the latest ruling indicate that Ikoyi Correctional Facility again did not admit Akanbi on medical grounds. His exact location, custody arrangements and access to medical care have not been publicly clarified.
