2027 Elections: Seven Ministers, Including Adelabu and Pate, Likely to Resign by March 2026

President Bola Tinubu has ordered all political appointees planning to contest the 2027 elections to resign by March 31, 2026. This directive covers ministers, special advisers, senior assistants and heads of federal agencies under Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act. Party primaries are set for April 23 to May 30, 2026. Candidate lists must reach INEC by July 11 for presidential and National Assembly seats, and by August 8 for governorship and state assembly contests. At least seven ministers are expected to step down under this rule. Names frequently mentioned include Bayo Adelabu, Bosun Tijani, Muhammad Ali Pate, Saidu Alkali, Yusuf Tuggar, Bernard Doro and Abubakar Kyari. The move aims to enforce electoral laws, promote transparency and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants. It underscores the administration’s pledge to strengthen democratic institutions and credible elections.

Is forcing political appointees to resign six months before the election really about fairness or just an excuse to reshuffle power?
