Okokomaiko Community Fights LAMATA’s Alleged Forceful Land Acquisition
By Naomi Onome Residents of four estates in Okokomaiko say LAMATA officials and armed security forced them to fill out census forms at gunpoint on May 8, 2025. They then learned their homes face demolition within four months for a proposed rail depot. The community of 315 homes argues that over 50 acres of land previously acquired for the project remain unused. A Federal High Court granted an interim injunction, but residents report that LAMATA continues surveys and soil tests under armed supervision. Attempts at compensation have failed. Some tenants were paid at the local palace to vacate, while electricity was cut off to weaken resistance. Residents warn that uprooting thousands without proper resettlement could spark crime and social unrest. They demand transparency, respect for the original master plan, and fair compensation that reflects true property values. They call on the Lagos State government to suspend all actions and engage in genuine dialogue.
